영국의 극작가, 소설가이자 비평가로 활동하였다. 온건좌파 단체인 '페이비언협회'를 설립하였다. <Man and Superman, 1903>을 써 세계적인 극작가가 되었고, 노벨 문학상을 수상하였다.

더블린 출생. 알코올 중독자였던 아버지는 세상을 비꼬는 코미디언의 재능을 갖추고 있었는데 아버지의 재능을 물려받은 쇼는 가난에 못이겨 십대 초반에 빈민층 카톨릭 신자의 자녀를 위한 교육 시설인 센트럴 모델 보이즈 스쿨에 들어간다. 가족이 처한 상황에 대한 모멸감을 느꼈다고 한다.

어디로 튈지 모르는 그의 기발한 생각을 학교는 수용할 수 없었고, 결국 그는 열다섯 살에 정규 교육을 중단하고 육체 노동과 사환 일을 반복하는 고단한 생활을 시작하였다. 그러나 직장 생활은 이제 막 문학적 소질을 보이기 시작한 더블린 소년에게는 전혀 매력적이지 않았다.

1876년 아일랜드를 떠나 런던으로 이주하였고, 그의 첫 번째 소설을 쓰기 시작하였다. 12년의 긴 시간이 흐른 뒤 언론계통에서 비평가로 자리를 잡았다. 'The Star'에서 음악 칼럼 시리즈를 연재하였다. 미학적 감각으로 전문지식의 부족을 극복하면서 평범함으로 정곡을 찌르는 논쟁을 피했다. 1890년 '월드'로 자리를 옮겼다.

연극 평론가로서 공허한 형식과 비현실적인 대사를 신랄하게 비판함으로써 명성을 얻기 시작하였고, 1895년부터 1898년까지 'Saturday Review'에 연극 비평을 개제하면서 매우 개인적인 연극 철학을 발전시킨다.

1892년, <Widower's House>라는 연극을 발표했다. 이후 <The Philanderer, 1898>, <Mrs Warren's Profession, 1893>, <Arms and the Man, 1894>, <Candida, 1894>, <The Man of Destiny, 1895>, <You Never Can Tell, 1897> 등의 작품을 발표하면서 그의 생활은 안정되었다.

쇼는 <Man and Superman, 1903>, <You Never Can Tell, 1905>, <Androcles and the Lion, 1912>를 발표하고 최고의 전성기를 누리었고, 1923년 <Saint Joan, 1923>을 발표하고 2년 뒤 노벨문학상을 수상하였다. <Pygmalion, 1913>은 연극에서 뮤지컬로 또 영화로 제작되어 그의 대표작이 되었다.
