미국의 극작가, 배우, TV 영화 감독.
1979년 희곡 <Buried Child>로 퓰리처상을 받았다. 1983년 <The Right Stuff>에서 파일럿 척 이거 역으로 출연하여 아카데미 어워드 남우조연상에 노미네이트 되었다.

영화배우, 영화감독, 극작가, 시나리오작가, 연극연출가, 작가 등 다양한 분야에서 활동하고 있다. 1943년 육군 장교의 아들로 태어났으며, 군사기지와 캘리포니아의 아보카도 농장에서 자랐다. 대학을 중퇴한 뒤 극단에 들어갔고, 배우가 되기 위해 1963년 뉴욕으로 갔다. 1969년 영화 <Easy Rider>에 출연하였다.
1960년 중반 오프오프브로드웨이 극장에서 실험적인 단막극 작가로 처음 성공을 거두었다. <Cowboys, 1971>에서는 인상적인 언어와 이미지, 환상, 심리적인 리얼리티를 바탕으로 혁신적인 구조가 특징적이다.
<Me and My Brother, 1968>, <Zabriskie Point, 1970> <The Unseen Hand>, 뮤지컬 <Rocky Horror Show> 등에 출연하였고, 1979년에는 희곡 <Buried Child>로 퓰리처상을 받았으며, 이 작품과 함께 < Curse of the Starving Class, 1978>, < True West, 1980>로 주목 받았다. 사실주의적인 면을 많이 보여주는 작품으로 성장하는 추세를 보여주고 있다.

영화배우로 활동하기도 하였는데, 그가 출연한 영화로는 <Days of Heaven, 1978>, <The Right Stuff, 1983>, <Paris, Texas, 1984>, <Baby Boom, 1987>, <Steel Magnolias, 1989>, <Homo Faber, 1991>, <Thunderheart, 1992>, <The Pelican Briefs, 1993>, <Snow Falling on Cedars, 1999> 등이 있다. 그가 시나리오를 쓴 <Paris, Texas, 1984>는 칸 영화제 그랑프리를 수상하였고, <The Right Stuff, 1983>으로 아카데미 남우조연상 후보에 오르기도 하였다. 또한, <Silent Rongue, 1994>, <Far North, 1988> 등은 직접 감독을 맡기도 하였다.
