영국 데번주, 플리머스 출생. 영국 올리비에 어워드 남우주연상을 수상한 배우, 연출, 뮤지션으로 활동하고 있으며, 극예술 로얄 아카데미에서 학생들을 가르치고 있다. 호지는 내셔널 유스 씨어터의 멤버이며, <Pacha Mama’s Blessing>을 써 알메이다 씨어터에서 공연하기도 하였다. 2010년 64회 토니어워드에서 남우주연상을 수상하였다.
1993년 2월 해롤드 프린터의 연극 <No Man’s Land>에 출연하였으며, <Moonlight>에는 그 해 9월에 출연하였다. 1998년 5월에는 <A Kind of Alaska>, < The Collection/The Lover> 등에 출연하였고, 같은 해 9월에 <Betrayal>에 제리 역으로 출연하였다. 2000년 11월 <The Caretaker>에 출연하였다.
그는 연출로 데뷔하게 되는데 2004년 옥스포드 플레이하우스에 올려진 프린터의 작품 <The Dumb Waiter>이었다.
이 외에도 연극 <The Winter’s Tale, 2002>, <Three Sisters, 2003>, <Dumb Show, 2004> 등에 출연하였다. 2005년에는 <Guys and Dolls>에 나산으로 출연하였고, 2006년 셰익스피어의 작품 리바이벌 연극 <Titus Andronicus>에 출연하였으며, 웨스트엔드 연출자로 데뷔하게 된 작품은 <See How They Run>이다.
2007년 <A Matter of Life and Death>에 출연하였고, 같은 해 드라마 <Doctor Who>와 2008년<Son of the Dragon>에 출연하였다. 그는 새로운 뮤지컬을 구상중인데 <Meantime>이라는 가제의 뮤지컬을 진행 중이다.
