텍사스주, 달라스 출생. 13살 때부터 무대에 섰다. 하이랜드 파크 고등학교를 졸업하였고, 남부 캘리포니아 대학에서 극예술을 전공하였다. 연극과 뮤지컬 무대에 주로 섰으며, 작품은 <Romeo and Juliet>, <Macbeth>, <Hamlet>, <Pippin>, <Guys and Dolls> 등의 무대에 섰다.

샌즈는 졸업 후에 TV 및 영화에 출연하였다. <Pack of Dogs, 2002>, <Die Mommie, 2003>, <Shall We Dance>, <Generation Kill> 등에 출연하였다. 샌즈는 <American Idiot>에서 맷 카플랜이 맡았던 튜니 역을 맡아 공연 중이다.
