매릴랜드주 베데스다 출생. 웨스트 버지니아주 헌팅톤에서 자랐다. 그의 아버지는 음악가였고, 어머니는 댄서였다. 줄리어드 학교를 다녔고, 1979년 필립스 엑스터 아카데미를 졸업하였고, 1983년 예일대학교를 졸업하였다.
배우로서는 브로드웨이 뮤지컬 <Sweenee Todd>, <The Who’s Tommy> 등에 출연하였고, 런던 웨스트엔드에서는 <Hedwig>에 출연하였다. 영화, TV 등 다양한 작품에서 활동하였으며, 음악 활동도 꾸준히 하고 있다.
