무대, 라디오, 영화 배우로 <The Wizard of Oz>에서 심장을 가지고 싶어하는 양철 나무꾼으로 출연하여 잘 알려진 배우이다. 이 외에도 다수의 영화에 출연하였다.
노래와 춤을 함께 하는 코미디언이다. 맛갈나는 연기로 영화에 활력소와 같은 존재로 그가 출연한 영화로는 주로 20세기 폿스사에서 제작한 <Pool Little Rich Girl>, <Higher and Higher>, <Alexander’s Ragtime Band> 등에 출연하였다. 19040년 대에는 뮤지컬 코미디 무대에 섰다. 1979년 80세에 대장암으로 사망하였다.
