그는 헐리우드에서 <Two-Lane Blacktop, 1971>을 쓰면서 그의 일을 시작하였다. <The Christian Licorice Store, 1971>에서는 작가와 프로듀서를 보았고, <Dusty and Sweets McGee, 1971>에서는 작가와 프로듀서 그리고 영화감독으로 데뷔하였다. <Freebie and the Bean, 1974>, <Aloha Bobby and Rose, 1975>, <the Hollywood Knights, 1980>, <American Me, 1992> 등을 썼다. 최근에 뮤지컬 <Million Dollar Quartet>에 작가로 참여하였다.
