존 케어드는 연출자이면서 극작가로 활동중이다. 케어드는 캐나다 출신으로 옥스포드와 맨스필드 대학을 졸업하였다. 로얄 셰익스피어 컴퍼니에서 조연출로 일하였으며 20여 편의 연극에 참여하였다.

1980년 찰스 디킨즈 원작의 <Nicholas Nickleby>을 트레버 넌과 공동 연출하였고, 1985년 <Les Miserable>의 인터내셔널 버전의 연출을 트레버 넌과 공동으로 맡았다. <Candide>, <Stanley>, <Children of Eden>, <Jane Eyre> 등의 연출도 맡았다. 특히 <Jane Eyre>은 대본과 연출을 맡아서 캐나다에서 올린 후 브로드웨이에 1998년부터 2000년까지 올려졌다.

오페라의 연출도 맡았는데 모차르트 오페라 <Zaide>와 베르디의 오페라 <Don Carlos> 등을 2007년 캐나다 오페라 컴퍼니의 제작으로 토론토에 올렸다. 이 외에도 2008년 <Aida>, <Brief Encounter>, 푸치니 오페라 <Tosca> 등의 연출을 맡았다.

스톡홀름에서 공연된 <A Midsummer Night's Dream, 2000>, <Twelfth Night, 2002>, <The Dance of Death, 2007>, 셰익스피어 작품 <As Tour Like It>, <The Merry Wives of Windsor, 2009> 등의 연출을 맡아 공연하였다.

존 케어드는 일본에서도 작업하였으며, <Les Miserable>, <The Beggar's Opera>, <Midsummer Night's Dream>, <Kinshu>, <Private, 2008>, <Jane Eyre, 2009> 등의 공연을 일본에서 연출하였다.
