This was the first timeI saw any ballet performance, live. I didn't exactly have high hopes but the viewing experience completely soured ballet for me.
First of all, half of the viewing audience seemed to be children under the age of 13. One lesson learned; always check the recommended audience age for the show. I don't know if there were so many kids because it was a Saturday evening performance or it if was because it was Swan Lake (when I asked the house manager later, though, she said that all of the week's Swan Lakes had had that many children. She expected it to be the same way with the Nutcracker...)Too many children is not in itself a problem but 90 seconds before the ballet began, a kid puked in the aisle right by my seat at the end of the row. This resulted in me having to listen to floor-scrubbing noises for the first half hour of the show.
Pretty much everything after that only worsened the experience. People clapping after literally every single piece of music. People being seated one hour into the performance. People taking photos of the stage in the row right before mine. People snoring loudly during the second act. And then. Once the ballet actually begain, I realized one real reason why I might not enjoy ballet so much; men in WHITE tights. Ugh.
The ballet itself was pretty and its saving grace was that I wasn't bored out of my mind. Not to mention the impressive acrobatics that were displayed throughout. Maybe if I wasn't so furious I could have enjoyed Swan Lake more. But I didn't get the impression that any ballet performance would touch my heart in the same way that opera does. Maybe that's because I'm a philistine to my core. After all, when the prince danced with the swans at the end of the first act, I kept waiting for La Streisand to pop out and do her schtick. And I found it (not!) amusing when I realized that the various ethnic dance ensembles at the beginning of the second act were so that the princesses could be presented/paraded for the viewing of the prince. I'm also sure that I wasn't the only one who noticed that Odette's body seemed to get redder and redder as she twirled in the second act.
