I attended Angela Hewitt's the first piano recital in Korea this evening. She is an internationally renowned concert pianist who has a remarkable understanding and performance of Bach's music especially.
The last two month of waiting for her concert was a roller coaster of anticipation and agony of waiting and I felt an immense pleasure to witness such an awesome performance, an art at its highest peak of glory.
I'm not an expert at the piano nor do I have an especially attuned ears to specifically explain her motives and story she unfolds when she hits the keyboards, however I felt what was sure to an utter perfection of music that I have no doubt in my mind that Bach himself would have been pleased.
The most important thing about a real, live concert is that you get to both 'hear' and 'see' the music that you could have only listed by turning on the CD player. You may notice the accent and speed of the musical piece by hearing the music, but when you really see it at the concert you can also feel the dramatic pulse, a feminine sweep of melody there, a musculine hitting of keyboards, and so on. This is all done by a concert pianist who not only plays the music but also performs the music with her whole body letting the audience know how to understand the music being played.
I was also very excited to find out that she was signing autograph for audience. The line was long but I had my reward and every minute of it was enjoyed. To actually speak to her was an experience I would never forget. Never had I ever felt so thankful that I could speak English.
Those of you who enjoy listening to classical music, and especially likes Bach keyboard music, I strongly recommend that you buy one of her CDs. When she comes back to Korea, I'm sure I won't be the only one cheering for more encores.
