배우. 영화 감독으로 활동하였고, <Passion, 1992>, <Lone Star, 1996> 등의 영화를 감독하였고, <The Last Temptation of Christ, 1988>의 감독을 맡았다.

켄터키주, 루이즈빌 출생. 웨스턴 켄터키 대학을 졸업하였고, 덴버 대학에서 연기를 공부하였다. 그의 브로드웨이 데뷔 작품은 연극 <Getting Out>, <Lone Star>였으며, 영화 <House of God, 1979>, <Cruising, 1980>으로 데뷔하였고, 1981년 <Honky Tonk Freeway, 1981>을 감독하였다.

연극 <Broadcast News, 1987>, <Big Business, 1988>, 제임스 카메론의 <The Abyss, 1989> 등에 출연하였다.

2007년 6월 63세의 나이로 운명을 달리했다.
