그가 처음으로 맡은 배역은 1987년 영화 <Prick Up Your Ears>이다. 이 외에도 <Raiders of the Lost Ark>, <Spider-Man 2, Species>, <Not Without My Daughter>, <Chocolat>, <Frida>, <Steamboy>, <The Hoax>, <The Da Vinci Code>, <Little Traitor>, <An Education>으로 잘 알려진 배우이다.

런던, 패딩턴 출생. 스페인 마드리드 출신 아버지와 이탈리아 출신 어머니 사이에서 태어났으며, 노팅힐에서 자랐다. 그의 나이 9살 때 영화 <Spartacus>를 보고 배우가 되고 싶어했다. 길드홀음악연극학교 졸업하였다.

1978년 시트콤 드라마 <The Losers>로 데뷔하였다. 1981년 <Raiders of the Lost Ark>, 1985년<Letter to Brezhnev>, 1987년 <Prick Up Your Ears> 등에 출연하였다. 이 밖에도 TV 시리즈 <Red Dwarf>, <El C.I.D> 등에 출연하였고, <Boogie Nights>, <Magnolia>, <Frida>, <Coffee and Cigarettes>, <Spider-Man 2>, <Spider-Man 3>, <As You Like It>, <The Da Vinci Code> 등에 출연하였다.

그는 연극무대 등에도 섰는데 테네시 윌리암스의 <The Night of the Iguana>와 <Speed the Plow>에 출연하였다. 브로드웨이에 데뷔한 작품은 야스미나 레자의 토니어워드 작품상을 수상한 작품 <Art>에 출연하여 1998년 토니어워드에 노미네이트 되었다. 2004년 브로드웨이 프로덕션 작품 <Fiddler on the Roof>에 출연하여 토니어워드 남우주연상에 노미네이트 되었다. 2010년 연극 <Red>에 출연하여 남우주연상에 노미네이트 되기도 하였다. 작품은 베스트 연극상을 수상하였다.

2010년 BBC 시트콤 <Roger and Val Have Just Got In>에 출연할 예정이다.
