작곡가 겸 피아니스트 이루마는 5세부터 피아노를 배우기 시작하여 11세에 영국 유학 길에 올라 유럽
음악 영재의 산실인 퍼셀 스쿨에서 작곡 및 피아노 최고연주자 과정을 졸업하였고, 이후 런던대학교
킹스컬리지에 입학하여 현대음악의 거장 해리슨 버트위슬을 사사했다. 2001년 대학 졸업 후 한국으로
돌아와 발매한 첫 정식 앨범 「Love Scene」에서는 그동안 한국에서 볼 수 없었던 스타일의
서정적이면서도 친근한 멜로디와 이루마만의 섬세하고 부드러운 감성, 클래식을 기반으로 한 탄탄한
연주 실력과 작곡 능력을 선보이며 대중과 음악계의 큰 관심을 받기 시작했다. 이후, 매년 꾸준한 음반
발매와 전국투어 콘서트를 통해 사람들의 마음을 위로하는 아티스트로 대중적인 사랑을 받고 있으며,
국내뿐 아니라 해외에서도 신 한류 문화를 이끄는 연주음악가로 인정받으며 그 저력을 과시하고 있다.
뉴욕 카네기홀, 링컨센터, 시드니 오페라하우스 대극장에서 진행되었던 단독 콘서트는 해외 팬들의
높은 좌석 점유율을 보이며 매년 전석 매진의 기록을 세우는 등 국경을 넘어 공감을 이끌어내는
세계적인 연주 공연으로 자리매김하였다.
이루마는 2001년 첫 앨범 발매 후 현재까지 200곡이 넘는 곡을 작곡했고, 20억 스트리밍 뷰를
기록하고 있다. 국내 연주음악가 중에는 독보적으로 일본, 독일, 호주 등지에서도 라이선스 앨범을
발매하였고, 독일과 말레이시아에서 발매한 앨범은 플래티넘까지 달성하며 명실상부한 글로벌
뮤지션임을 입증했다. 이루마의 최근 앨범인 20주년 기념 SOLO 앨범은 현재 15주간 빌보드 클래시컬
차트에 랭크되며 꾸준한 인기를 누리고 있고, 그의 10주년 기념 앨범은 미국 빌보드 클래시컬
앨범차트에서 23주간 1위 자리를 차지하였고 현재까지 무려 170주 이상 차트에 랭크되는 기록을
세웠다. 그의 20주년 기념 앨범 [SOLO] 역시 빌보드 차트 클래시컬 부문 9위까지 오르며 세계
무대에서 꾸준한 사랑을 받고있다.
피아노 연주자로서의 활동 뿐 아니라 본인의 곡을 모두 직접 작곡하고, 영화, CF, 애니메이션 OST 및
2AM, 김호중, 백지영, 에일리, 샤이니 등 다양한 가수들의 곡 작업에도 참여하며 작곡가로서도 활발한
활동을 보여주고 있는 이루마는, 사람들에게 힘이 되고 위로가 되는 음악으로 국경을 넘어 많은 이들과
소통하고, 그 음악이 그들 인생의 소중한 순간에 삶의 배경음악으로 기억되기를 바라는 마음으로
작곡과 연주활동을 이어가고 있다.


Yiruma's musical journey began at age five, when a fascination with the piano grew into a love for
music and composition. He moved to England at the age of 10 to join the prestigious Purcell School of
Music then enrolled in London University of King's College.
Yiruma's first album, Love Scene, came out in 2001, and demonstrated his skill in combining friendly,
approachable melodies with a polished performance. That same year, he wrote the follow-up
collection, First Love, which included the iconic No.1 hit River Flows in You. In 2002, Yiruma
performed at the prestigious Marché International du Disque et de l'édition Musicale in Cannes, the
first Korean musician to do so.

2003 saw the release of Yiruma's third album, titled From the Yellow Room, and a host of sell-out
shows in South Korea. At this time Yiruma was also demonstrating his versatility by writing for bands
and other artists, including 2AM, Kim Hojoong, SHINee, Ailee and Baek Ji Young. Yiruma's success
continued to flourish internationally as well. In 2012, he made an appearance on the German TV
show Wilkommen Bei Carmen Nebel, and in the following years, he held sold-out concerts in a myriad
of countries and popular venues, such as the New York Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center and Sydney
Opera House.
With new opportunities presented by online platforms, Yiruma's 10th Anniversary compilation album
The Best: Reminiscent, shot to No. 1 for 23 weeks in the US Billboard charts, and dominated the
charts for more than 170 weeks. This marked yet another milestone in album sales, becoming the
second platinum award to add to his already amassed pair of gold awards.
Yiruma continues to find inspiration in people around him, and hopes his music can heal, inspire, and
remind the audience of love and hope. With each piece, Yiruma prays that he can show God's love by
intertwining his aspirations with music that connects with people all around the world.
